The Facts About Jefferson Griffin and the North Carolina GOP’s Efforts to Steal An Election:

Let’s start here...

Justice Allison Riggs won the race for NC Supreme Court. Multiple recounts have confirmed her victory in last November’s NC Supreme Court election, but her Republican opponent, Jefferson Griffin, initiated a lawsuit seeking to toss out over 65,000 of the legal ballots cast in the race.

Unfortunately, two NC Appeals Court judges recently ruled in Jefferson Griffin’s favor, potentially disenfranchising tens of thousands of North Carolinians and aiding his efforts to overturn Justice Riggs’ victory. There are several great articles that explain the horrifying realities of what Jefferson Griffin and the NC GOP are trying to do. You can read some of them here, here, and here.

The NC Supreme Court granted Justice Riggs’ request to temporarily block this ruling, but anyone on the side of democracy urgently needs to prepare for it to go into effect even as the appeals continue.

Here are the FACTS about how North Carolinians feel about Jefferson Griffin and his shameless crusade against democracy:

  • An overwhelming 72% of North Carolinians believe that the next Supreme Court justice should be decided by the 5.5 million voters who cast ballots in November—not the seven justices on the NC Supreme Court.
  • 54% of voters OPPOSE ballots being thrown out and only 25% support.
  • Only 21% of voters approve of the job the current Supreme court is doing handling this case.
  • Only 17% of voters polled believe Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin should be certified as the winner.

Looking ahead, Hold the Line and our pro-democracy partners are committed to ensuring voters are aware of what’s happening – and these poll results show why that work is vital. This week, Hold the Line is launching a major media campaign across North Carolina to inform voters about Jefferson Griffin’s anti-democratic actions and another Republican effort to overturn an election. We will make sure North Carolinians hear the facts: that a partisan court majority is willing to subvert their votes, and that one defeated candidate (Griffin) is trying to seize a seat that voters didn’t award him — a coup on our democratic values.
